Introduction to Zhejiang International Studies University

Zhejiang International Studies University (浙江外国语学院, website) is a public provincial university based on foreign languages and literature. The predecessor of the university was the Zhejiang Institute of Education, founded in 1955. It started general undergraduate education in 1994 and was restructured and renamed with the approval of the Ministry of Education in 2010.

The university is located in Xiaohe Mountain Higher Education Park, adjacent to Xixi Wetland. The campus covers an area of 555.5 acres; it has fully functional modern teaching facilities, one provincial key experimental teaching demonstration center construction site, one provincial experimental teaching demonstration center; multilingual simultaneous interpretation, language laboratories, and teacher education Experimental centers, e-commerce laboratories, virtual simulation laboratories, national traditional sports laboratories and other basic and professional experimental centers. There are currently 1.013 million paper books in the collection, including 121,000 multilingual foreign original books; 804,600 e-books, including 292,800 foreign e-books; 951 Chinese and foreign newspapers and periodicals; 30 Chinese and foreign databases.

Zhejiang International Studies University currently has 13 teaching units (English Language and Culture College, Oriental Language and Culture College, Western Language and Culture College, Chinese Language and Culture College, International Economics and Tourism Management College, Education College, Cross-border E-Commerce College/Science and Technology College /Cross-border E-commerce Entrepreneurship College, Art College, “One Belt and One Road” College/ Overseas Chinese College/ International College, Applied Foreign Language College, Marxist College, Sports Education and Research Department, Continuing Education College), 35 undergraduate majors, including 15 foreign language majors There are 13 languages involved (English, Japanese, Italian, Portuguese, Arabic, Spanish, French, Russian, Korean, German, Czech, Turkish, Polish). English major is a national-level first-class undergraduate major construction point; Arabic, international business, Chinese international education, tourism management, and elementary education are the provincial-level first-rate undergraduate major construction points.

The university currently recruits students from 16 provinces (autonomous regions) across the country, with a total of 8,500 students. The school’s talent training characteristics have been recognized by the society. The admission ranking of college entrance examinations has been increasing year by year. In 2019, the number of students admitted to the first stage in the province reached 48%, and 13 majors were admitted online. In recent years, the employment rate of fresh graduates has remained above 95%, and the postgraduate entrance examination rate has remained above 12%. There are 250 practical education bases. Students have repeatedly achieved good results in various national and provincial competitions. The international voluntary service brand is more refined and stronger, with more than 3,000 international volunteers. University student volunteers play their professional expertise and actively contribute to the G20 Hangzhou Summit, previous World Internet Conferences, World Swimming Championships, World Zhejiang Business Conference, World Cultural Exchange Conference, China Yiwu Import Commodities Fair and other international conferences and events provide voluntary services such as translation.

Zhejiang International Studies University currently has 485 full-time teachers, including 194 (40.0%) associate professors, 258 (53.2%) teachers with doctoral degrees, and 235 overseas (foreign) studies for 6 months or more. People (48.5%), most teachers of foreign language majors have overseas study experience.

The university has established the Urban Internationalization Research Institute, the “Mediterranean” Research Institute, the National and Regional Research Center (under the Arab Research Center, the German Research Center, the Latin American Research Center, the Hong Kong and Macao Research Center), and the Zhejiang Culture “Going Global” collaboration Innovation Center, Education Governance Research Center, and more than 20 research institutions including foreign linguistics, applied linguistics, and translation.

The university is the unit of the Chinese Government’s Excellent Undergraduate International Exchange Program and Zhejiang Province’s Excellent Undergraduate International Exchange Program. It has established exchanges and cooperation relationships with 100 universities in more than 40 countries and regions. Through international joint training models such as mutual recognition of credits and joint degree grants, the average annual number of students is nearly 450, while the admission of international students to the school for long-term and short-term studies, with an average annual enrollment of 250 students. The school actively participates in the international promotion of Chinese and has two Confucius Institutes in Equatorial Guinea, Antigua and Barbuda. The Spanish-speaking undergraduate education project in cooperation with the University of Zaragoza in Spain was approved as a Sino-foreign cooperative education project of the Ministry of Education, and is the first special project of Spanish-speaking (tourism management direction) Sino-foreign cooperative education in China.
