Xuchang University is the predecessor of the Joint Normal School of the Fifth Administrative Region of Henan Province, which was established in August 1942. In July 1946, the Henan Provincial Xuchang Teachers School was established, and the five district teachers were merged into the Xuchang Teachers School. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the school developed healthily. In 1959, it was approved by the State Council as a normal college. In 1963, it was adjusted to a middle normal school because of national economic difficulties. In 1978, it was the first batch of normal colleges to be re-established.
