Introduction to Xi’an International Studies University
Xi’an International Studies University (西安外国语大学, website) is one of the first four foreign language colleges established in China, and the only university in Northwest China with a complete range of major foreign languages. In 1951, with the approval of the Ministry of Education of the Central People’s Government, the Russian Department of Lanzhou University College of Letters, the Russian Division of the Department of Foreign Languages of Northwest University, and the Department of Russian Studies merged to form the predecessor of Xi’an International Studies University-Northwest Russian College.
In 1958, it was renamed Xi’an International Studies University. The university covers an area of 1593 mu with a building area of 801,000 square meters. The school vigorously promotes the construction of a smart campus, with full coverage of wired and wireless networks, and rich high-quality network teaching resources. Public service platforms such as digital campuses are gradually established. It has smart classrooms, a multilingual translation experiment teaching center, an international financial investment and business comprehensive simulation experiment teaching center , Northeast Asia Research Multimodal Laboratory, Collaborative Innovation Laboratory and other modern laboratories, the school’s classroom multimedia facilities are 100% equipped. The library’s collection of documents covers 32 languages, including Chinese, English, French, Russian, German, Spanish, Japanese, and Arabic, 1,527 Chinese and foreign newspapers and periodicals, and 42 Chinese and foreign databases.
The university has 21 colleges (departments) and other teaching institutions, and there are 20,000 doctoral students, master students, undergraduates, foreign students and various training students.
The school has strong scientific research strength. The Polish Research Center and the Northeast Asia Research Center have been registered by the National and Regional Research Centers of the Ministry of Education. The Belt and Road Language Service Collaborative Innovation Center is the Shaanxi Province 2011 Collaborative Innovation Center, the European and American Literature Research Center, Foreign Linguistics and Applied Languages Science Research Center, International Public Opinion and International Communication Research Institute are the key research bases of philosophy and social sciences in Shaanxi (universities), with 33 university-level scientific research institutions including the Language Big Data Research Center, the American Research Institute, and the Translation Teaching and Research Center.
The university has successively signed cooperation agreements with 262 higher education institutions and scientific research institutions in 48 countries and regions including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Russia, etc. to implement joint training programs for talents at different levels of academic, master, doctorate; Carry out academic exchange and cooperation projects such as mutual assignment of teachers and students, mutual recognition of credits, mutual award of degrees, and joint holding of international conferences; introduction of overseas study visits and internships in the United States, Germany, Switzerland, Japan and Hong Kong. The school has been designated by the Ministry of Education as a designated institution for the China-US Fulbright Program of the China Scholarship Council, and is the only HSK (written and computer-based test) and HSKK test center certified by the Ministry of Education in Northwest China. The school actively responded to the national “One Belt and One Road” initiative, established the Central Asia Institute to carry out education for international students in Central Asian countries, and established 9 “Belt and Road” national regional research centers. The school has established 3 Confucius Institutes in Kazakhstan, Argentina, and France, and has been awarded the “Advanced Chinese Cooperative Organization Award” by Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters, Shaanxi Provincial Government Department, Education Department and other units. In 2012, the establishment of a multilingual base (Xi’an) for the international promotion of Chinese was approved by Hanban. The school cooperates with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and the Association of Management Accountants to open ACCA teaching reform classes, CIMA teaching reform classes, and CFA teaching reform classes. It also builds a Russian language and culture center with the Novosibirsk State University of Technology in Russia, and builds a Sino-German college with the University of Münster in Germany ; The Korean Cultural Center, the German Goethe Institute, and the American Pucheng English Group have established “Sejong Academy”, “Goethe Language Center” and “Qin Susan English Center” in the school. In addition, the school also has a training base for overseas study personnel of the Ministry of Education, the Preparatory Education Center for Study Abroad of the China Scholarship Council, and the Study Abroad Service Center of China (Ministry of Education).
