Introduction to Shaanxi Normal University
Shaanxi Normal University (SNNU, 陕西师范大学, website), a university directly under the Ministry of Education, is a world-class discipline. It is an important base to train teachers for higher education institutions, and secondary school, to train education administrators and other senior professionals. It is known as the “cradle of teachers.”
The predecessor of the university was the Shaanxi Provincial Teachers College, which was established in 1944. In 1954, it was renamed Xi’an Normal University. In 1960, it merged with Shaanxi Normal College and was named Shaanxi Normal University. In 1978, it was placed directly under the Ministry of Education.
Shaanxi Normal University is located in Xi’an, one of the four historical and cultural cities in the world. It covers an area of 2,800 acres and has two campuses, Chang’an and Yanta. Chang’an Campus is modern and open, and the Yanta Campus is simple and elegant. The university was awarded the title of “Civilized Campus” by the Ministry of Education and the Shaanxi Provincial People’s Government.
Shaanxi Normal University has a graduate school and 21 colleges, a basic experimental teaching center and a national education college (pre-university education), 68 undergraduate majors, 18 doctoral degrees authorized first-level disciplines, 41 master’s degree authorized first-level disciplines, a doctoral degree accreditation point and 24 master’s degree accreditation points.
There are more than 1,800 teachers in the university. Teachers with doctoral and master’s degrees account for 94% of the total number of teachers, including 72% of doctoral degrees. Among the teachers, there are more than 470 professors and more than 700 associate professors.
Shaanxi Normal University has 17,509 full-time undergraduates and 18,229 graduate students, more than 1,200 international students, and 90,164 continuing education and online education students. The two campuses of the university have an area of 57,800 square meters, and have a collection of 4.36 million paper books, 81 domestic and foreign electronic resources, and 241 databases. Shaanxi Normal University also has an educational museum consisting of four parts: the Chinese Education Center, the Women’s Cultural Center, the Historical and Cultural Center, and the Painting and Calligraphy Art Museum.
Shaanxi Normal University continues to strengthen foreign exchanges and cooperation, and has established friendly and cooperative relations and carried out various forms of exchanges and cooperation with more than 130 universities and educational institutions in the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia, South Korea, Japan, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Ukraine, Armenia, as well as Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Since 1965, the university has enrolled foreign students, and has trained more than 6,700 international students from 103 countries around the world.

Shaanxi Normal University has affiliated secondary schools, affiliated primary schools. Among them, the affiliated middle schools are 100-year elite schools, Shaanxi Provincial Key Middle Schools, the first batch of Shaanxi Provincial Model High Schools, and the affiliated primary schools are provincial model primary schools. In recent years, the school has fully utilized the advantages of educational resources, and has established more than 20 primary and secondary schools including Jinyuan International School, Xi’an Qujiang No. 1 Middle School, Olympic Garden School, Ludiyu Primary School and Vanke Primary School in cooperation with governments at all levels and enterprises.

About Xi’an
Xi’an (Panorama) is the capital of Shaanxi Province and the oldest of the Four Great Ancient Capitals, having held the position under several of the most important dynasties in Chinese history. It is about 2 hours by air from Beijing and 2 hours from Shanghai. Known as the leading city of China’s Western Development Drive Program since 1990s, Xi’an is an important economic, cultural, industrial and educational center of the central-northwest region, providing visitors with modern and convenient facilities.
Transportation
Xi’an was the eastern terminus of the Silk Road, and played a very important part in Chinese history. Today Xi’an is one of the most important and convenient transportation hubs in central and western China. Frequent flights, trains and buses connect the city with other major cities all around the country. The urban transportation of the city has been somewhat frustrating in recent years because of the metro construction. Now metro line 1, line 2 and line 3 are in operation. Several other lines are also under construction or in the planning process. For now the buses and taxis can take you to get around the city.
Food
Xi’an is a foodie paradise, with excellent restaurants serving local and international cuisine. You can’t come to Xi’an without sampling the following: savory, often spicy roujiaomo “burgers”; DIY roupaomo, a soupy concoction of bread in mutton stew; cumin-laden meat skewers in the Muslim Quarter; and refreshing liangpi rice noodles with peanut sauce, perfect for cooling down in the heat of summer. Make sure to visit the night market to explore the flavors of Shaanxi street food.
