Shanghai Foreign Language School (上海外国语学校, website) is one of the first foreign language schools approved by the State Council in 1963. The school is directly under the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. It is currently the chairman and director of the National Foreign Language School, and the national Chinese language practice base for international promotion. It is a school with distinctive foreign language education characteristics.

Shanghai Foreign Language School is a complete middle school with a consistent seven-year school system. Every year, a large number of senior high school graduates enter the first-class universities at home and abroad for further study. The school features multilingual courses, offering foreign language courses in English, German, French, Japanese, Russian, and Western languages, and implements small-class teaching. The school started bilingual classes from the middle preparatory grade, that is, students majored in a small language and English. In addition, the school has set up a “secondary foreign” course from the first grade, students can choose a small language according to their interests.

With the development of education reform, according to the country’s demand for talents with scarce languages, the Shanghai Foreign Studies University will add four courses in Arabic, Persian, Hindi, and Hebrew from 2018, and encourage learning. Of students choose more than two small languages.

As a foreign language school directly under the Ministry of Education, the school attaches great importance to the development, continuation and development of inter-school exchange projects. At present, the school has concluded 31 sister schools across the Americas, Europe, Oceania and other countries and regions in Asia; the school has nearly 60 student exchange programs.
