Introduction to Hangzhou Foreign Language School

Established in 1964, Hangzhou Foreign Language School (杭州外国语学校, website), also called Hangwai is one of the 17 famous foreign language schools in the country that enjoys a 20% admission qualification and is recognized as a provincial-level key middle school directly under the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Education, the first batch of key special schools in Zhejiang Province, and recognized by the Ministry of Education.

In the early 1960s, in order to meet the needs of my country’s rapid development of various undertakings and the expanding international exchanges, Premier Zhou Enlai and Foreign Minister Chen Yi decided to establish a foreign language school to train high-level foreign language talents. In 1963, eight foreign language schools including Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin and Nanjing were established. Entrusted by the Ministry of Education, Zhejiang Provincial Department of Education is responsible for the preparation of Hangzhou Foreign Language School in Hangzhou.

From 1978 to 1984, Hangwai recruited 80 students each year in downtown Hangzhou. From 1985 to 1990, the enrollment range expanded from Hangzhou to several cities in the province, and only 80 students were recruited each year. With the development of the economy and the increase in social demand, the original scale of the foreign language school needs to be expanded. The Provincial Education Commission decided to build a new foreign language school. In September 2003, the school was relocated to Xiaoheshan Higher Education Park with its elegant environment.

Our school has established a foreign language teacher training base for elementary and middle schools in Zhejiang Province. Since its establishment in Hangzhou Waiwai in 2010, the base has organized more than 40 provincial teacher training classes in various disciplines, training nearly 3,000 teachers in elementary and secondary schools in and outside the province, and the student satisfaction rate is consistently in the forefront of similar teacher training units in the province. The base has also signed teacher training agreements with education bureaus in counties (cities and districts) in the province, and has established cooperative school partnerships with nearly 30 middle schools in the province. On the basis of strengthening English subject training, Hangwai gradually promoted its advanced educational concepts and practical experience, developed and opened special training programs for subjects (or fields) such as Chinese, mathematics, science experiment, drama, moral education, etc. Introduce distance education into teacher training to expand the training space and improve the effectiveness of training.

Since Hangzhou Foreign Language School reached a teacher exchange agreement with Minnesota in 1986, the school has established sister school relationships with more than 10 schools in the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Hong Kong and other countries and regions. , And frequently carried out exchange visits between teachers and students. The school attaches great importance to academic exchanges and cooperation with overseas sister schools and cooperating units. In addition to joint online courses with North Carolina Mathematics and Science High School, it also developed an online cooperative learning project with the Minnetonka School District in Minnesota, USA. The American St. Paul’s Girls’ School has established an Internet penpal project, which enriches students’ learning experience and enhances students’ cross-cultural awareness and communication skills. As a base for the promotion of Chinese language in primary and secondary schools, Hangwai’s efforts in teaching Chinese as a foreign language and spreading Chinese culture have also been unanimously affirmed by Hanban and foreign units. In recent years, the school has established two Confucius Classrooms in cooperation with local middle schools in the United States. Six to eight teachers are sent to teach abroad each year. It has successfully hosted 4 “Chinese Bridge” Summer Camps for British and American students.

On the basis of improving the teaching level of foreign language subjects, the school actively creates green channels for studying abroad, strives to build a diversified school running pattern, and provides students with high-quality and efficient overseas study pathways, thereby cultivating and highlighting the overall advantages of running foreign languages. The school has established long-term enrollment partnerships with more than 10 universities including the University of Iowa in the United States, the University of Toronto in Canada, the Rouen Institute of Advanced Engineers in France, Ritsumeikan University in Japan, and National University of Singapore, and introduced the A-Level course. High School Curriculum Experiment Class”. The experimental class has now developed into a leader in similar projects in China, and also provides a useful reference for Hangwai to deepen the reform of education and teaching.
