Introduction to Hainan Middle School

Hainan Middle School (海南中学, website), referred to as Haizhong, is located in Haikou City, Hainan Province. It is a first-class middle school in the province. The school belongs to the Hainan Provincial Department of Education.

The predecessor of the school is the private Qionghai Middle School founded in 1923 by educator Zhong Yanlin. After the founding of New China, the school was changed from private to public. In 1953, the school was named Guangdong Hainan Middle School. In 1959, it was identified as one of the first key middle schools in Guangdong Province. After the new province was established in 1988, it was identified as a key middle school in the province.

The school has two teaching areas of junior high school and high school, with a campus area of 196,000 square meters and a school building area of 186,000 square meters. It has 98 teaching classes in two junior and senior high schools. There are nearly 5,000 students in the school, 485 in-service teachers and staff, including 389 full-time teachers.

There are 6 teaching buildings, a basketball court (2 photos), a science hall, a library, a planetarium, a gymnasium, a plastic sports field, 7 student apartment buildings, 12 faculty residence buildings, an art activity center, and a food center. The school library has a collection of 120,000 books; the broadband campus network built in 2001 and continuously expanded in the following years has realized high-speed networking of education, teaching and administrative management. The school’s electronic reading room is connected to the public information network, education technology network, and the Internet. As of the end of 2008, the school has 32 multimedia audio-visual classrooms/laboratories dedicated to disciplines, 1 multimedia studio, 4 speech classrooms, and 5 computer classrooms. There are more than 460 teaching and office computers, all of which have been transformed into a multimedia audio-visual classroom.
