Yichang Expats – Living in Yichang
Tom, USA
On the campus of Three Gorges University, a foreign teacher from the United States, wearing a red casual jacket and a large black backpack, greeted people around him enthusiastically, just like an old friend.
Tom, the Chinese name is Li Jianglong. In a heavy snowfall in 2018, he became a “net celebrity” foreign teacher after his deeds of pushing a bus together with Yichang citizens were reported by CCTV.
“I have spent 9 Spring Festivals in Yichang, and this is already my home.” Tom said that every Spring Festival, he would go to a friend’s house in Yichang to “catch” New Year’s Eve dinner, and he was not alone at all.
In the summer of 2009, he came to China to travel. The friendliness of the Chinese people and Chinese culture left a deep impression on him, which gave him the urge to come to China to work and live.
After being matched by friends, Tom came to Yichang in 2010 and became an oral teacher in a middle school. He is also the recipient of the first foreigner work permit in Yichang. In 2015, after Tom’s five-year contract expired, he chose to stay in Yichang and was hired as a spoken foreign teacher at Three Gorges University.
“The friendly and enthusiasm of the people in Yichang is an important reason why I am willing to stay.” Tom said that the first apartment he came to live in Yichang, because the remote control was all in Chinese, he could not turn on the TV. After learning, the landlord translated all the Chinese on the remote control into English and posted it on the TV. This small move made him feel very warm.
Tom said that after living in Yichang for 9 years, he has deeply integrated into the city. On weekends, Tom would take a walk along the Yichang River with his friends, climb mountains, or travel around. Tom also witnessed the rapid development of Yichang. “Yichang nowadays has more and more ‘international style’.” Tom said excitedly. There are many new shops, coffee shops, theme restaurants in Yichang, as well as BRT lanes, high-speed trains… these are all great.
He also noticed that the city is developing rapidly and facing problems such as pollution. The government has made a lot of determination to rectify and make people’s lives better. “Yichang is still a city with a tolerant spirit.” Tom revealed a detail. Once he went to the CBD, he found that the English spelling of the sign “No smoking” was wrong, so he gave his opinion. When he went again, he found that it had been corrected. After that, he was entrusted by the Yichang Municipal Government to review the English translation of the city’s signage. For the future, Tom intends to stay in Yichang to study for a doctorate in management science.
