Taiyuan Expats – Living in Taiyuan
Mr. T, USA
The first time I got to know China was through a movie “Mulan” that I watched as a child. In the film, I discovered that China is a small village. This is also his initial impression of China. But when I came to Taiyuan, I found that there were high-rise buildings, which were not exactly the same as what he expected. It has been nearly two years since I came to Shanxi University or Shanda. I like here very much and I also like this job.
Because I grew up in a small village, I often see small streets like Xuxi street in Jackie Chan’s movies. After coming to Shanda in 2016, I often go there and taste a variety of food. When I was in class, I would chat with my students about weekend plans, but found that students were always studying and doing homework. Chinese students take their studies very seriously. This is the biggest difference between Chinese students and the United States. In my free time, I would like to hang out with my friends to eat hot pot and walk around the campus. I suggest all my students go out of the classroom and out of the dormitory to relax after class and on weekends.

Bruce Boyes, USA
Bruce is from Australia. Before coming to China, he was also a teacher. He came to Shenzhen, China with his friends four years ago, and initially planned to do business. “But doing business failed,” Bruce said embarrassedly. He came to Taiyuan a year and a half ago and found this job at Shanxi University that he loved and enjoyed. Although he has not been to Taiyuan for a long time, he has been outgoing and has already wandered the streets and alleys of Taiyuan, Wanda, Liuxiang, Changfeng Commercial District, Jinci… He was like a local who talked about every place he had been to. Now, he has fallen in love with this city and enjoys what it brings him.
Bruce loves Chinese food. His favorite food is hot pot. He said that in Australia, even in small villages, there will be Chinese restaurants, and Chinese food is very popular in his hometown. “I have been to Beijing, Tianjin, Xi’an, Kaifeng, Hangzhou, Zhuhai… I have also been to Chengdu to see pandas. China has many beautiful scenery and friendly people. “Every place makes me feel great.” At Shanda, he also made friends. For the future, he said that he plans to stay in China and stay in Taiyuan before retirement.
At 52 years old, he has the mentality of a 25-year-old young man. “You look younger than your age” when heard the compliments to him. He was very happy to say “Thank you!” He said that he loves teachers. Profession and being with children made him feel very young. His students said that Bruce was an acting school and would use situational dialogue to teach in class. He played the characters vividly and entertainingly. Bruce said that Chinese students are very diligent and rigorous, and have clear goals in doing things. These are what Australian students lack.
Bruce has the typical character of Australians. He is refreshing, cheerful and good at conversation. During the conversation, Bruce introduced a lot of Australian customs. The pace of life of Australians is relatively slow, and he admires the diligence and steadiness of the Chinese. He said that he planned to learn Chinese, and once again lamented that there was not enough time.

“The Chinese New Year brings a lot of happiness to our family!” Tony, a foreign teacher from an English training institution in Shanxi, told reporters in fluent Chinese.
Tony is a teacher of Taiyuan No.1 Foreign Language School. “One of my children was born in Taiyuan, and now he is studying at a school in Taiyuan Fuxi Street.” Tony said, “Our family has been in China for nearly 12 years, and I like China very much. Chinese people are willing to share happiness with foreigners. It makes me feel very comfortable.”
Tony is fascinated by the profound traditional Chinese culture and is curious about many things around him. “The second year I came to China, a few British friends came to China during the Spring Festival. They heard the sound of firecrackers outside the house and they called me over very nervously, saying that someone was shooting.” Tony said, “I told them it was not shooting. , It was the Chinese celebrating the Spring Festival and setting off firecrackers…”
“In Britain, the government does not allow firecrackers to be set off, so my friend thought someone was shooting.” Tony said, “This is one thing that impressed me the most after I came to China. It was very interesting. It can be said that this culture The collision and adaptation on the Internet is a very interesting process.”
Having been in China for a long time, Tony and his family have been infected by the traditional Chinese culture. In many living habits, they are no different from the Chinese. “Especially the children…” Tony said, “They behave almost exactly like Chinese children. I will give them red envelopes during the Spring Festival, and sometimes we will go out with the family, because as soon as the Spring Festival comes, most of my Chinese friends will disappear. ‘Now. Sometimes they invite us to eat dumplings on New Year’s Eve and watch the Spring Festival Gala.”
In the minds of Tony and his family, the Chinese New Year will not be as grand as Western Christmas, but they are happy to enjoy the happiness of this holiday.
