Peggy Mitchell
“In the eyes of more and more foreigners, Hefei is a beautiful and open city with more and more attractive.” Ms. Peggy Goldman Mitchell, principal of Hefei Canadian International School, told reporters.
“The development and growth of the school is inseparable from the increase in the attractiveness of the city.” In the opinion of President Mitchell, Hefei has become more and more open in recent years, and many internationally renowned companies have chosen to develop here. More and more foreigners come to work or look for opportunities.
“Many of the teachers we recruited didn’t know Hefei before, or even heard of Hefei. But when they came here, they quickly fell in love with the city.” Principal Mitchell told reporters, right? As far as foreigners are concerned, Hefei, with a population of more than 7 million, is an out-and-out big city, and the transportation here is very convenient. “Now, everyone is looking forward to getting on the subway at the school gate one day soon.” Principal Mitchell said with a smile.
The warm and friendly Hefei people also left a deep and beautiful impression on Principal Mitchell. She specifically mentioned an experience not long ago. At that time, the school organized foreign teachers to a Thanksgiving party in a nearby restaurant. The restaurant owner specially sent everyone blessings and small gifts. “Although it is a small matter, we all feel extra cordial, maybe This is what the Chinese often say, “home away from home”.”
Foreign Teacher Lucas
Lucas is from the U.S., he is now a physics teacher at Hefei University of Technology. When he was more than 10 years old, he started contacting bicycles and fell in love with the sport. In early 2017, he and his wife came to Hefei from the United States to live. When he first arrived in Hefei, he tried to get to know the city through cycling.
“Walking through the mountains and rivers of Hefei made my wife and I fall in love with the city. I have fallen in love with Hefei. The riders here are very friendly and the environment in Hefei is also very good.” Lucas said.
“Riding around Chaohu Lake, one side is a beautiful lake view, you can ride with other riders, and the other side is authentic town life, you can see old people drying fishing nets and children playing games. I like Such a relaxed atmosphere. When you ride around Chaohu Lake, you can feel that you are blending into everything around you, which is very’Hefei’.” Lucas said.
“You know, the fresh fish on the shore of Chaohu Lake is the best!” Lucas said, so much so that he has been recommending Hefei food to his hometown friends.
Looking back at himself who decided to come to Hefei for the first time, Lucas nodded, very satisfied with his decision. Because here, he met more friends through cycling; experienced the charm of Hefei city through cycling; experienced Hefei culture through cycling and promoted and recommended Hefei.
Speaking of his ideals, Lucas said that he wanted to be a “Good Rider”, make more correct choices, and be bolder. Even if you look back on this life in the future, you can say to yourself: “Wow, this is a really good journey.”
Falk Hoehn
Falk Hoehn is a German professor at Hefei University, is very impressed by the changes in Hefei.
“Every time I return to Hefei from Germany, in just a few months, I can feel the development and growth of the city.” The burly Professor Horne greeted the reporter with a smile on his face and handed the reporter a business card. Hefei German Academy of Applied Sciences is the “keyword” on the business card.
In 2007, at the invitation of the Provincial Department of Education, Professor Horn, who was the vice president of Hannover University of Applied Sciences, Germany, came to Hefei University to work and became the first “foreign president” among universities in our province. Horn told reporters that as a foreigner living in Anhui, he has a deep feeling about the “Anhui speed”.
“Anhui is becoming more and more international, thanks to the rapid economic and social development and the unlimited vitality of reform and opening up.” Professor Horn told reporters that in 1999, Professor Horne came to Hefei for the first time and picked up his car from Hefei. When Luogang Airport was heading to the city, the bumpy roads and gray buildings made his “first glance” impression of Hefei not so good.
When Horne, who first arrived in Hefei, having an authentic Western meal and German beer was a difficult thingfor him. After years of development, nowadays western restaurants can be seen everywhere on the streets of Hefei. Whether it is from the choice of dishes or the words and deeds of customers, people feel a strong “international style”.
The work is enjoyable. Horn and the teachers of the Art and Design Department of Hefei University have forged a deep friendship. He introduced advanced German industrial design ideas and methods into the product design of some enterprises in our province. Welcome and favor of the market. In order to facilitate communication with Chinese friends, he often carries a “Chinese Dictionary” with him.
Outside of work, Horn likes to wear a helmet to travel on a motorcycle, especially Huizhou cultural experience travel. Even if he sometimes travels by bike alone, he doesn’t worry about personal safety. “Anhui people are very friendly and simple, and the social security environment is very reassuring.” Horn said. In the village heads of some ancient villages, Horn always lingered for hundreds of years of old trees. What impressed him even more was the multilingual signs erected next to the trees, which are rare in other countries he has traveled.
The longer he lives in Anhui, the more and more Horne likes Anhui. Not long ago, his daughter came to Hefei from Germany with him. She not only liked the beautiful scenery of Hefei, but also admired the vibrant city development.
“Life here is so convenient. Even if you buy a popsicle in a small street shop, you can pay with your mobile phone.” Horn’s daughter said. Europeans are still accustomed to using cash or credit cards, and the Chinese have used a smart phone to cope with all kinds of daily consumption. Not only that, online shopping, shared bicycles, Didi taxis, urban subways, etc., make many young Hefei expats feel convenient.
