Introduction to Tianjin University of Commerce

Tianjin University of Commerce, formerly known as Tianjin Business School, was founded by the Ministry of Commerce and the Tianjin Municipal People’s Government in 1980. In 1998, the school implemented a management system of joint construction between the central and local governments, with local management as the main focus. In 2007, the school was renamed Tianjin University of Commerce.

The school is located at 409 Guangrong Road, Beichen District, Tianjin, covering an area of nearly 1400 acres with a building area of 510000 square meters. The total value of teaching and research instruments and equipment is 578 million yuan. The library currently has a collection of 2.26 million Chinese and foreign language books, 66 Chinese and foreign language databases, and 4.2191 million e-books. The school has more than 23000 students, including 13 professional colleges: School of Mechanical Engineering, School of Economics, School of Management, School of Accounting, School of Biotechnology and Food Science, School of Law, School of Public Administration, School of Marxism, School of Foreign Languages, School of Science, School of Information Engineering, School of International Education Cooperation, and School of Arts. There are also three teaching departments: University Foreign Language Teaching Department, Basic Course Teaching Department, Sports Teaching Department, and Vocational and Continuing Education College. There are currently 60 undergraduate majors, 11 first level disciplines authorized for master’s degrees, and 12 professional master’s degree categories. The school has the qualification to recommend outstanding fresh undergraduate graduates to pursue graduate studies without examination, as well as the qualification to recruit graduate students from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, and the right to apply for master’s degree awards for individuals with equivalent academic qualifications.

The school adheres to cultivating composite applied innovation and entrepreneurship talents with a high sense of social responsibility and profound business literacy, and has established a four in one innovation and entrepreneurship education system of “consciousness, knowledge, ability, and experience”. It has been selected as one of the first batch of “National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Practice Bases” construction units. The school has been approved with 13 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 11 Tianjin municipal first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 7 national first-class undergraduate courses, and 27 Tianjin municipal first-class undergraduate courses. We have one national level high-quality resource sharing course and 16 municipal level high-quality courses. There are 4 national characteristic majors, 11 Tianjin brand majors, 5 Tianjin strategic emerging industry related majors, 8 majors for Tianjin advantageous characteristic specialty construction projects, and 12 majors for Tianjin applied specialty construction projects. The Finance major is a national comprehensive reform pilot major, the Food Science and Engineering major is one of the first batch of outstanding agricultural and forestry talent education and training program reform pilot majors in China, and the Energy and Power Engineering major is one of the Tianjin comprehensive reform pilot majors and the Tianjin “Excellent Engineer Talent Training” pilot majors. The school has a national level experimental teaching demonstration center for thermal energy and power engineering, a national level experimental teaching demonstration center for food and medicine, and a national off campus practical education base for college students named “Tianjin University of Commerce Yantai Ice Wheel Co., Ltd. Engineering Practice Education Center”, as well as a training base for outstanding talents in China’s tourism and hotel industry; We have 10 Tianjin municipal level experimental teaching demonstration centers (including construction units), 1 Tianjin municipal level virtual simulation experimental teaching center, and 1 Tianjin A-level (excellent) university co creation space. In recent years, 13 people have won the Municipal Teaching Master Award and 18 municipal teaching teams have been established.

The school adheres to the strategy of “strengthening the school with talents” and has a high-level teaching staff. There are currently 1181 full-time teachers, including 150 senior teachers and 301 deputy senior teachers; 709 individuals hold doctoral degrees. We have 6 national level talents, including 3 experts enjoying government special allowances, 1 leading professional and technical talent in national ecological environment protection, 3 candidates for the Ministry of Education’s “New Century Excellent Talent Support Program”, 1 outstanding Jinmen scholar in Tianjin, 2 experts with outstanding contributions in Tianjin, 12 candidates for the first level of the “131” innovative talent training project in Tianjin, 5 talents in the “Five Batches” of Tianjin, and 1 young scientific and technological innovation leader in the Tianjin Innovation Talent Promotion Plan. There are 2 “131” innovative talent teams in Tianjin, 5 innovation teams in Tianjin’s higher education institutions, and currently 13 part-time doctoral supervisors.

The school adheres to the discipline construction as the leader, with coordinated development of disciplines such as economics, management, engineering, law, literature, science, and art, supporting each other, and possessing distinct business characteristics. The school currently has 7 key disciplines at the municipal level. The disciplines of Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics have been selected for the construction list of first-class disciplines in Tianjin. The disciplines of Cold Chain Logistics and Modern Service Industry have been selected for the construction list of Tianjin’s characteristic discipline groups. The disciplines of Cold Chain Energy Systems, Green Biomanufacturing, Digital Economy and Modern Service Industry Development Innovation have been selected for the construction list of Tianjin’s university service industry characteristic discipline groups.

The university’s scientific research and innovation capability has been steadily improved. There are three ministerial level scientific research platforms, namely, the Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Education of Refrigeration Technology, the Collaborative Innovation Center of time-honored brands of the Ministry of Commerce, the Key Laboratory of Low Carbon Cold Chain of Agricultural Products of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (jointly built by the Ministry and the province), one Tianjin Engineering Center, two Tianjin Key Laboratories, one Tianjin the Belt and Road Joint Laboratory, two international joint research centers, two Tianjin Key Research Bases of Humanities and Social Sciences, one Tianjin high-end cultivation think tank, two Tianjin university think tanks, and there are cross innovations such as “Environmental Energy+X Innovation Laboratory”, “Double Carbon Research Institute”, “Big Health Collaborative Innovation Institute”, and “Digital Economy and Green Development Research Center”. In recent years, the school has undertaken 67 national level scientific research projects, including 1 key project of the National Natural Science Foundation, 1 key project of the National Social Science Foundation, and 1 national key research and development plan project. Received 37 scientific research awards at or above the provincial and ministerial levels. Four teachers have been selected for the top 2% of global scientists and Elsevier’s list of highly cited scholars in China; Engineering and agricultural science disciplines have entered the top 1% of ESI globally.

The school adheres to international development, promotes international exchange and cooperation, and has established close partnerships with more than 30 universities in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, Australia, Canada, France, Japan, South Korea, Romania, Poland, etc., carrying out various forms of cooperation and exchange. We have collaborated with universities such as Charleston University in Australia and the University of East Michigan in the United States for undergraduate and master’s degree programs. We have also established doctoral joint training programs with the University of Thackeray in Paris and the University of Huddersfield in the UK, actively building a high-level talent training system that is in line with international standards.
